Previously, we talked about checking with your insurance company and then having a professional come in and clean your home or car if the neighborhood kids got a little mischievous this upcoming Halloween and egg your car. There are a lot of other hazards that might come up on Halloween or during any holiday or time of year when curious children might accidentally get into things they shouldn’t.

Playing with fire is a serious problem and in 2010 alone, 44,900 fires were caused by someone, normally a child, playing with fire. Here are some other facts that might interest you:

  • You may not expect your kindergartener or preschooler to be the one most at risk to get into the matches, but this is the age group that is most likely to start fires and to be killed in them.
  • Forty percent of the house fires that result from this start in the bedroom. Make sure you are keeping an eye on your children while they are playing in their rooms.

firefighter-boyYou should store your matches and lighters in a high, preferably locked, cabinet that children can’t get to easily. Out of sight means out of little hands!
